Understanding Nutrition

With the release of the new dietary guidelines, in the form of the new food pyramid, I still find that many people don’t actually understand what nutrition actually means. Because of this, dietary choices can seem overwhelming. Even greater confusion can be generated by prime time news specials which only strive to educate through clever sound-bites and diet fads which lead some to believe that all of their answers are found in one single “magic food.” So what is nutrition and how can you understand it in a way that helps you apply it to your life and to the benefit of those you know and love? Here’s an analogy I have found helpful in teaching those who attend my free Sunday Night Wellness Call.

Your body functions in a manner similar to a car assembly plant. At that plant, a steady stream of new parts, the correct parts and parts in the right ratios to each other are absolutely necessary in order to keep that plant open for business and running smoothly.

What would happen if someone in purchasing forgot to provide that plant with steering wheels? The cars would be almost functional. But because of a single part deficiency, that car would not be able to carry out its intended function.

How To Get A Flat, Toned Stomach

One of the most common fitness questions this time of year is "How can I tone my stomach for swimsuit season"? Typically, people believe that the guaranteed quick route to obtaining a rock-solid six-pack is a path packed with hundreds of sit-ups or abdominal crunches. Wrong!

The reality is that even if you do crunches every day you aren’t guaranteed to get the stomach you desire. Getting those highly sought after, toned abs requires more work than just abdominal exercises. Plus, as far as stomach exercises go, sit-ups or crunches alone are not the solution.

We won’t go into detail about the muscles that make up the abdominal wall, but it’s good to know the basic information. At a high-level the abdominal/trunk area consists of 5 major muscles. It’s necessary that all of these muscles be exercised. It’s also important to utilize different types of training techniques like concentric, eccentric and isometric.

In addition to training those muscles, it is imperative that you also reduce the fat in your stomach area. If you don’t decrease the fat in this area, then you’ll never see well-defined abdominal muscles not matter how long and hard you train them.

Monitor Your Body Fat Levels For Results

A very important aspect in really finding out if you’re on the right track or not, is to monitor your body fat levels. Go to your local sports store and buy some body fat calipers to test your fat levels. Record these levels along with your body weight each week and start to monitor these changes. You want to make sure you’re building quality muscle mass and burning that extra body fat.

By monitoring the changes of your lean body weight, you will be able to tell whether or not you are replacing adipose tissue (fat) with hard earned muscle. Lean body weight (muscle) can be found by subtracting your body weight with your body fat weight. You body fat weight is calculated by multiplying your weight with your body fat percentage.

Tips on measuring your body fat levels:

1. Take all measurements on the right side of your body.

2. Carefully identify and recall your measuring site for accuracy.

3. Take the measurement when skin is dry and lotion-free.

4. Do not measure immediately after exercise due to shifts in body fluid.

There are three main sites for measuring your body fat for males:

Bathing Suit Season - A Lifestyle Guide

To prepare ourselves for the Summer Sun we want to do more for ourselves than just watch what we eat. We want to get every part of ourselves moving, metabolizing and breathing.

1) Exercise First Thing - Start in the morning. Move and breathe for at least 30min to an hour. Studies show that exercising in the morning burns up to 3x more fat than working out at any other time during the day. When you wake up in the morning your body doesn’t have any carbohydrates stored to burn as energy so it turns to burn body fat to burn for energy. Your metabolism also boosts after your morning movement and stay elevated throughout the day. An elevated metabolism throughout the day only means that you’ll burn more calories and lose more weight.

2) Breakdown Your Goals - One of the main reasons people fail to meet their goals is they set up unrealistic expectation or extremely complicated goals. Most of us have the tendency to jump to the end product without paying much consideration to what it actually takes to get there. Take a look at what I mean:

? My goal is to lose 8 - 10 pounds for the summer.

Kokoro no Kaze: Does Your Soul Have a Cold?

Feeling sad? Have you lost interest in things you used to enjoy? Perhaps you’re suffering from a cold of the soul.

That’s the concept that has taken Japan by storm in the last five years, thanks to a culturally savvy marketing campaign launched by pharmaceutical companies to turn mild depression into an acceptable malady that a simple prescription can cure.

Anyone familiar with Japan will recognize that “kokoro no kaze” (literally “cold of the soul”) is a phrase guaranteed to resonate with the citizens of that country. Preventing and treating colds is practically a national pastime there.

Everywhere in Japan, you see people wearing gauzy surgical-style masks covering their nose and mouth. Although some may be wearing the masks to protect themselves from the latest bug, the majority of wearers are simply being courteous. In a nation lauded for its complex culture of politeness, the Japanese wear masks when they come down with a cold as a polite way of warning and protecting others.

In Japan, your dentist and dental assistants are likely to wear masks–not to protect themselves from your mouth breathing, but to provide a polite barrier so that you won’t be inadvertently subjected to their germs or the lingering odor of their sushi lunch.

Alkalize Your Way to Better Health

Today we’re shifting our focus from wealth to health. First of all, I am not an expert. If you have a health condition, you should go see your doctor. What I’m going to discuss in this post is something I was first exposed to at a Tony Robbins seminar.

First let me set the stage. It was day for of the Tony Robbins “Unleash the Power Within” seminar in Pasadena, CA. I had been to the seminar before, so I knew what to expect. Or so I thought…

The way the previous seminar had been run, Tony was out of the building–gone–bye-bye. The topic was on Living Health, a subject that Tony Robbins is very passionate about. The story we had been told is that the last time he spoke about it live, he went for 18 hours! Now those of you who have been to one of his seminars knows that this is entirely possible. In fact, the previous days certainly seemed close to that.

Winter Weight Loss

As our bodies move from Winter into Spring we can begin to really feel the need to "shed the winter weight". Whether we actually have weight to lose or not, this is an excellent time of year to give attention to our body’s need to feel lighter. Every body is different and, as I always say, therefore not one way of eating serves everyone, but here are three general steps to physically prepare the body to move into spring.

Weight Loss ? Physical Preparation

1. Drink 8-10 glasses of water each day

For those of you who find this difficult because of a dislike for the taste or a schedule that doesn’t allow you to be going to the bathroom consistently just keep this in mind: your body wants to let go of any excess weight and toxins that it has been holding over the winter, but it needs help. Just like a plant needs water to grow, so do you. Once you get started, you will begin to crave water. This is how much your body actually needs it.
